| Q1. |
What are the differences between the Cisco Catalyst 3120G and the 3120X |
| A1. |
The 3120G is a 1Gb stacking switch that has four 1Gb RJ-45 uplinks. An additional 4 1Gb SFP can be installed in the X2 slots using a supplied Twin-Gig Converter Module. The 3120X is a 1Gb/10Gb stacking switch that has four 1Gb RJ-45 uplinks and two 10Gb X2 uplinks. The 3120X will also support 4 1Gb SFP uplinks using a Twin-Gig Module. The switches are designed to provide maximum flexibility in a stacking environment.

| Q2. |
Can I upgrade a 3120G to a 3120X? |
| A2. |
No. Although both switches share a common look, it is not possible to upgrade a 3120G to support any of the 10Gb functions of the 3120X.
|
|
| Q3. |
Can I mix and match the 3120G and 3120X in the same Stack? |
| A3. |
Yes. In fact this provides the most cost effective stacking solution. The Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3000 Series for HP Hardware Installation Guide shows various configurations based on most datacenter requirements.
|
|
| Q4. |
How does the 3120 get configured in a stack? |
| A4. |
One of the switches controls the operation of the stack and is called the stack master. This master is elected automatically by the Cisco StackWise software. The stack master and the other switches plugged into the stack then become stack members. The stack members use the Cisco StackWise technology to work together as a unified system. Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocols present the entire switch stack as a single entity to the network.

Software |
| Q1. |
What IOS firmware is running on the Catalyst Blade Switch 3120? |
| A1. |
Both versions of the Catalyst 3120 come with the IP Base IOS firmware package.
|
|
| Q2. |
Are there any firmware add-ons available for these switches? |
| A2. |
Yes, two firmware add-ons are available. IP services and Advanced IP Services IOS firmware provide additional levels of functionality such as Layer 3 or advanced IPv6 routing. They are sold separately and allow you to customize the switch to your exact datacenter requirements.
|
|
| Q3. |
Can the Firmware be upgraded to IP services or Advanced IP Services at any time? |
| A3. |
Yes, These firmware packages can be installed either at time of purchase, or any time after installation as your requirements change.
|
|
| Q4. |
How are firmware updates handled? |
| A4. |
IOS Firmware updates will be available on the HP website. Cisco will also make the firmware available on their website to authorized users, consistent with other Cisco Catalyst switches.

Connectivity |
| Q1. |
Do I need to purchase any special mezzanine card to use the CBS 3120X as a 1Gb/10Gb switch? |
| A1. |
No. The switch will operate in interconnect Bays 1&2 without any additional NICs or Mezzanine cards. To add additional switches into any other interconnect-bay, use any of the currently available 1Gb Mezzanine cards such as the NC373m or the NC326m Dual Port Adapter.
|
|
| Q2. |
What is a Twin-Gig Module? |
| A2. |
A Twin-Gig module is a Cisco accessory that plugs into the X2 ports on the CBS 3120 switch. When used on the 3120G, it allows the two unused 10Gb ports to accept up to four 1Gb SFP modules. When used with the 3120X, the Twin-Gig module allows a user to convert the X2 port from 10Gb to dual 1Gb SFP ports. Two modules are supplied with each switch.
|
|
| Q3. |
What type of uplink modules are supported? |
| A3. |
The CBS 3120G will accept both Cisco fiber and copper SFP modules. The 3120X will support SR, LRM, LX4 and CX4 X2 modules in addition to the SFP modules listed above. Only Cisco branded modules purchased through HP or Cisco authorized sales channels will work with these switches.
