Overview

Compaq Survey Utility
The Compaq Survey Utility is an information-gathering agent that runs on Compaq ProLiant and Prosignia servers. It helps maximize server availability by streamlining the configuration analysis and troubleshooting processes. The Survey Utility gathers both critical hardware and operating system information, and is available for Microsoft® Windows® NT®, Microsoft Windows 2000, Novell NetWare, and Linux Intel environments.
The Survey Utility captures data as sessions, and maintains up to 10 distinct sessions at a time. For Windows and NetWare systems, session information is maintained in an output file called SURVEY.IDI in a binary format, which can be used for generating custom reports. The SURVEY.TXT file contains system information in a text file format. For Linux systems, session information for each session is output to an individual text file.
Survey Utility output files can be analyzed locally by the Survey Utility, or sent to Compaq Customer Services, or a third-party service provider, for further analysis.
Typical uses of the Survey Utility include:
  • Capture the hardware and operating system configuration of a server
  • Record critical information for documentation and disaster recovery
  • Compare historical configurations on the same server or another (baseline) server
  • Send configuration information to another location for in-depth analysis
  • Generate custom reports providing configuration audit trail detail
The Compaq Survey Utility is a powerful troubleshooting tool for IT administrators and service providers. It is part of the Compaq Intelligent Manageability strategy to simplify management of the IT Infrastructure, and is an enabler of Compaq's vision for virtual presence. Since 1995, it has been used extensively by Compaq Services organizations for analyzing and troubleshooting Compaq servers.
