The HP Insight Virtual Machine Manager for ProLiant (VMM) v3.7 plug-in extends HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) capabilities to manage virtual machines. Virtual Machine Manager provides central management and control of VMware, Microsoft, HP Integrated Citrix, and Xen on RHEL & SLES virtual machines with physical host to virtual machine association, easy identification of VMs or host servers reaching high CPU, memory or disk utilization levels, highly flexible move capabilities that allow live moves and moves to dissimilar host resources, back up, template and alternate host capabilities that enable restoration of VMs on any available host, and the ability to react to predictive hardware alerts on your VM hosts before server failures occur.

Together, HP Systems Insight Manager and Virtual Machine Manager enable you to get the most out of a unified physical and virtual server infrastructure. HP SIM and VMM offer the only-out-of-the-box solution that can receive a predictive failure alert and automatically evacuate all VMs from a VMware ESX host server by initiating VMware DRS.

Standard Features

Key Virtual Machine Manager features
Unified physical and virtual server management	Provides associations between virtual machines and physical host and integration into HP Systems Insight Manager and enables all tasks to be run from the Systems Insight Manager console, leveraging existing discovery, identification and notification processes already available in SIM.

Heterogeneous VM Management	Provides control functions for virtual machines from VMware, Microsoft, Citrix and Xen from a central console that allows users to manage virtual machines in a consistent manner irrespective of virtualization layer.

Remote control of virtual machines	Provides start, stop, pause, reset, move, copy, backup, create template and restore functions for VMs remotely from HP Systems Insight Manager.

Flexible move capabilities

Flexible move capabilities allow multiple usage scenarios. In high availability situations that do not allow service interruptions, Live Move (initiate VMware VMotion technology from Systems Insight Manager - requires VirtualCenter) can be used (for ESX only). Where flexibility is required to execute fast moves between dissimilar host hardware, SAN-based fast move can be enabled (ESX only).
In high availability situations, quick move capabilities can be used for HP integrated Citrix XenServer 5.0 (resource pool environment only) and Hyper-V (MSCS clusters only).
Where the VM Host is not connected to a SAN, a file-copy move can be used.

Alternate host capability	Enable Failed Host Recovery situations by assigning alternate hosts to VMs. If host fails, quickly restart VM on new host.

Performance monitoring	Make informed decisions on workload optimization with "at a glance" single view of virtual machine and associated host server performance. Set usage thresholds for CPU, memory, and disk usage and proactively receive alerts in SIM when thresholds are exceeded and take corrective action.

Predictive failure actions	Automatically respond to predictive hardware failures on ESX 3.x host servers by relocating VMs before a server fails, reducing downtime.

Integration with virtualization tools	Launch VMware VirtualCenter or Microsoft System Centre Virtual Machine Manager from HP SIM to perform tasks as needed. View ESX host cluster and resource pool properties from VirtualCenter in HP SIM.

Centralized events and altering	Collect events from ESX 3.0 and above and VirtualCenter in HP SIM to use HP SIM as your central event consolidation and alerting tool.

Software Technical Support and Update Service
Virtual Machine Management Pack includes one year of 24 x 7 HP Software Technical Support and Update Service. This service provides access to HP technical resources for assistance in resolving software implementation or operations problems. The service also provides access to software updates and reference manuals either in electronic form or on physical media as they are made available from HP. (Customers who purchase an electronic license to use are eligible for electronic updates only.) With this service, Insight Control and ProLiant Essentials customers will benefit from expedited problem resolution as well as proactive notification and delivery of software updates. If you received a license entitlement certificate, registration for this service will automatically take place upon redemption of the license certificate/key online and a service contract will be created for you.

If the license information you received for your product instructs you to register for Software Technical Support and Update Service, please follow the instructions or you will not be eligible for telephone support or product updates.

Once registered for this service, you will receive a letter in the mail containing the Customer Service Phone number for your reference and your Service Agreement Identifier (SAID). After you have received your SAID, you can go to the Software Update Manager (SUM) web page to view your contract online and elect electronic delivery for your updates.
