iLO 2 General
Q1. What is Integrated Lights-Out 2?
A1. Integrated Lights-Out 2 (iLO 2) is HP's fourth generation of Lights-Out management technology for ProLiant servers now delivering the industry's most complete, high-performance, out-of-band remote management solution. iLO 2 is a new management processor and firmware that enables a new generation of innovative and standards based remote management capabilities including high performance Virtual KVM, Java-free Integrated Remote Console, power management, embedded system health and more.

iLO 2 remote control and management functionality is available as standard and licensed upgrades on ProLiant servers. The licensed upgrades are known as iLO Select and iLO Advanced. These are explained in more detail below.

Q2. How can Integrated Lights-Out 2 benefit my business?
A2. Integrated Lights-Out 2 allows you or your server support staff to have full remote control of a ProLiant server without compromise for routine administration or occasional maintenance. iLO 2 eliminates more trips to remote ProLiant servers than any other remote control solution because it enables full remote control when the system is powered off, starting up, distressed or operating normally. With iLO 2, you can perform virtually any task remotely as if you were at the server using its keyboard, mouse and monitor, power button and floppy, CD/DVD or USB key. With iLO 2 firmware version 1.35, multiple server administrators can even view and share control of the system console to collaboratively troubleshoot and administer ProLiant servers.

iLO 2 puts you in control whether the remote system is powered off, distressed or running normally. iLO 2 is the single, remote control solution that dramatically reduces the need to travel to a server or to find qualified local support when responding to a problem or performing routine administration of hardware, firmware or software. iLO 2 offers industry leading HP Lights-Out remote management and control that has enabled reduced operational costs and increased availability on millions of ProLiant servers.

Q3. How is Integrated Lights-Out 2 different from its predecessor, Integrated Lights-Out?
A3. Integrated Lights-Out 2 provides the foundation for the next generation of HP Lights-Out innovation. The key enhancement in iLO 2 is Virtual KVM, HP's innovative remote digital video redirection technology that provides KVM over IP performance using embedded hardware. In addition, iLO 2 offers ease of use features like the Java-free Integrated Remote Console that allow you to remotely control the system console, power button and removable storage from a single screen. Subsequent iLO 2 firmware versions have also introduced network connectivity without an extra network port, OS-independent hardware health monitoring and unique power metering and reporting, remote console collaboration and replay and more.

Q4. What is the latest new feature enhancement release of iLO 2 firmware?
A4. iLO 2 firmware version 1.35 is now available for download with new support for remote console collaboration, console replay, virtual folders, thermal capping, automatic login from HP Systems Insight Manager, group control of virtual power and UID from the HP Systems Insight Manager menu, DMTF WS Management support, Active Directory nested group support, AES encryption and remote Windows kernel debugging. These enhancements clearly extend iLO 2 leadership as the most comprehensive remote management and control tool available.

Q5. What servers support iLO Select Packs and Advanced Packs?
A5. iLO Select Packs are supported on all iLO 2 based ProLiant ML, DL and BL servers with iLO 2 firmware version 1.11 or greater installed. iLO Select Pack licenses are also supported on first generation iLO management processors with firmware version 1.91 or greater.

New Licensing for iLO2 Advanced and Select
Q1. What are the new choices for buying iLO Advanced Packs and iLO Select Packs?
A1. iLO Advanced and iLO Select Packs are licensed and packaged to provide customers with choices to meet a variety of needs. Starting July 9, 2007 with iLO 2 firmware version 1.35, HP iLO Advanced Packs and HP iLO Select Packs may be purchased in two ways:
  • Bundled within an Insight Control software suite such as Insight Control Environment or iLO Power Management Pack with one year of 24 x 7 Software Technical Support and Update Service ensuring rapid access to HP support staff and proactive delivery of software upgrades.
  • On a standalone basis with a one-time license activation key and optional upgrades which may be purchased as they become available. Maintenance updates with fixes and enhancements to iLO 2 Standard and iLO 2 Standard Blade Edition will continue to be available at no charge.
Q2. What upgrades are available now?
A2. The first iLO Advanced and iLO Select upgrades for iLO 2 management processors are expected during the first half of 2008. However, in the meantime HP will release maintenance updates when required.

Q3. Will there be any changes to the iLO Advanced or iLO Select Pack part numbers or licenses?
A3. Yes, in conjunction with these changes, the part numbers for new single server, flex and tracking licenses have changed along with changes to the End User License Agreement and license keys that activate iLO Advanced and iLO Select features. So, after July 9, 2007, all single and flex license orders will require the use of the new part numbers. The same is true of orders for tracking licenses associated with new Activation Key Agreements (AKA) completed after July 9, 2007. The only exception involves tracking license orders associated with AKA's completed prior to July 9, 2007. In these cases, customers may continue to place orders for tracking licenses with pre-July 9th part numbers until the expiration date of those AKA's.

In addition the following features are standard on blade servers with iLO 2 Standard Blade Edition:
  • Virtual KVM - HP's innovative remote digital video redirection technology that provides KVM over IP performance using embedded management processor hardware.
  • Virtual Media - from a browser only, boot a remote server to a standard 1.44-MB diskette, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, ISO 9660 image or USB flash key on a client machine.
Q2. Why are iLO 2 Standard and iLO 2 Standard Blade Edition different?
A2. iLO 2 Standard is supported on ProLiant ML and DL servers where remote graphical console and virtual media features have been traditionally offered as licensed upgrade features. Due to the inherent remote management nature of HP ProLiant BL server blades, access to the remote graphical console and virtual media from a browser are essential to the deployment and operation of the server. Therefore, HP offers these features as standard on iLO 2 based ProLiant BL server blades. Other "advanced" features may be activated on these server blades by purchasing an iLO Select Pack.

Q3. What security features are standard with iLO 2 management processors?
A3. iLO 2 provides total remote control without compromise. iLO Standard and iLO Standard Blade Edition provide industry leading security in the following ways:
  • Each iLO 2 management processor is shipped with a unique default username and password to prevent unauthorized access until standard security is configured.
  • Up to 12 locally stored user accounts with unique user names and passwords
  • Industry standard Secure Socket Layer (SSL), and interfaces are secured from an encryption and authentication perspective.
  • Dedicated network connectivity enables a physically isolated "management subnetwork." In addition, VLAN tagging can be used to logically isolate the dedicated network connection as well as the iLO 2 shared network port.
For more information about the extensive iLO 2 security, download the white paper, Integrated Lights-Out Security.
Q4. What is WS Management?
A5. Web Services Management (WS Management) is an emerging standard for programmatic interfaces used to manage systems over a standard networks. It is part of the Server Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) initiative of the Distributed Management Task Force, Inc. (DMTF) which will provide a common way for heterogeneous systems and applications to access and exchange management information across an IT infrastructure. iLO 2 and other management processors have traditionally used proprietary XML programmatic interfaces to provide scalable, automated interaction with other systems and applications. HP is committed to delivering products that enable improvements in data center efficiency using standards such as SMASH and WS Management. HP will deploy SMASH technology across the entire line of ProLiant and Integrity servers and will include WS-Management support across ProLiant and other HP servers.
Q5. What remote console capabilities are supported in iLO 2 Standard?
A5. iLO 2 Virtual KVM operates differently than the first generation iLO remote console. It allows customers to view the system BIOS console and POST on ProLiant ML and DL servers without an iLO Advanced license. This is referred to as pre-OS mode. To continue viewing the system console text and graphics remotely after the OS begins booting (OS-mode), a license is required. However, for access to a true text console in pre-OS and OS modes with iLO 2, users may use the iLO 2 Standard remote serial console without a license. The remote serial console may also be launched from an SSH client using a CLP command.

iLO Select
Q1. What is iLO Select?
A1. iLO Select is a set of license key-activated features that are supported on ProLiant BL servers as well as ProLiant ML and DL servers. It provides cost-effective Lights-Out management upgrades for ProLiant servers that are managed using the remote text and graphic consoles provided in iLO 2 Standard and iLO 2 Standard Blade Edition. While the features vary slightly between blade and rack and tower servers, iLO Select typically includes features that enhance the standard consoles, virtual media, advanced security and power management.

Q2. Why did HP introduce iLO Select Packs?
A2. iLO Select Packs are an ideal Lights-Out upgrade in two situations. ProLiant BL customers need a means of upgrading to obtain the advanced Lights-Out features that are not included with the new iLO 2 Standard Blade Edition. In firmware v 1.20, this includes enterprise security, scripted and CLI virtual media as well as Power Regulator reporting.

In addition, ProLiant ML and DL customers who use only the iLO 2 remote console in pre-OS mode and the remote serial console available in iLO 2 Standard need a licensed value pack that does not include graphic console features. iLO Select Packs are the ideal solution to both of these customer requirements.
Q3. What is the difference between iLO Select and iLO Advanced?
A3. iLO Select Pack enables a subset of the features enabled by the iLO Advanced Pack on iLO 2 management processors. The primary difference is the remote graphic console and Terminal Services pass-through available with iLO 2 Advanced. These features are not required with new iLO 2 based blade servers because they are both included in iLO 2 Standard Blade Edition. Otherwise, both iLO Select Pack and iLO Advanced Pack support Virtual Media, advanced security and power management.

Q4. Why should I use iLO Select Packs in a blade environment?
A4. iLO Select provides improved security, virtual media and power monitoring and reporting. Standard locally stored user accounts may not provide the efficiency or effectiveness required in enterprise environments. iLO Select activates directory services and two factor authentication to address these issues. iLO Select also allows automatic login to iLO 2 management processors from HP Onboard Administrator or HP Systems Insight Manager. Also, many larger accounts need the performance and scalability offered with scripted virtual media and command line oriented users often need a secure command line interface for Virtual Media as well. Since power is such a key concern in data centers today, the ability to access useful historical power consumption data at the indvidual blade level will help customers understand and plan their infrastructure from a power and cooling perspective. Finally, iLO Select also activates enhancements to the iLO 2 Integrated Remote Console that enable multi-user collaboration and access to automatically recorded console video that enables diagnosis of previous system faults and boot process errors. All of these capabilities significantly improve your ability to remotely control ProLiant BL server blades.

Q5. Why should I use iLO Select Packs in Linux environments?
A5. In a situation where command line tools are used exclusively to manage servers, iLO Select Packs activate command line and scripted access to functionality that extends remote control of ProLiant servers. These situations are typically found in Linux environments where there is a need to insert a bootable virtual CD or DVD on a remote server or where server power monitoring and control is critical to building an efficient power and cooling infrastructure. Also, security is increasingly important in homogeneous Linux environments and heterogeneous OS environments as well. iLO Select allows customers to manage user access to iLO 2 with LDAP based directory services and two factor authentication.
In addition, if customers are using Windows clients, Linux servers may be managed

iLO 2 Advanced
Q1. What features are now available with the iLO Advanced on iLO 2 management processors?
A2. The key iLO 2 Advanced features are:
  • Virtual KVM - HP's innovative remote digital video redirection technology that provides KVM over IP performance using embedded management processor hardware
  • Integrated remote console - with full Virtual KVM, Power and Media control from a single, Java-free console on clients running Microsoft Internet Explorer

  • Two-factor Authentication - restrict iLO access using advanced security requiring possession of a smartcard or USB flash key and a PIN
  • Single sign-on - automatically login to iLO 2 from HP System Insight Manager (version 5.1 or greater) and the HP BladeSystem Onboard Administrator
  • Power management reporting - From any iLO interface, monitor current and historical power levels for Power Regulator for ProLiant
  • Thermal capping - enables the power cap setting to limit thermal output on supported servers.
  • Remote kernel debugger - connect a Microsoft Windows debugger running on a remote PC to the iLO Virtual Serial Port(VSP) to diagnose and repair operating system kernel errors
  • Flexible key acquisition and management - purchase single or multiple system keys and automate key activation to groups of systems with scripted deployment

Q2. How are the iLO Advanced features enabled on iLO 2 management processors?
A2. The iLO 2 management processors are upgraded in the same manner as iLO (first generation) management processors by using a license key available with the purchase of a ProLiant Essentials Integrated Lights-Out Advanced Pack option. The license key can be entered using the iLO 2 browser, command line or scripting interfaces to automatically activate iLO 2 Advanced. The license keys provided in the ProLiant Essentials iLO Advanced Packs activate both iLO Advanced and iLO 2 Advanced features.

Q3. What are the licensing options available for ProLiant Essentials iLO Advanced Packs?
A3. There are three license options for both iLO Advanced and iLO 2 Advanced There are three license options for both iLO Advanced Packs on either iLO 2 or iLO management processors.
  • Individual software option kits - For a single license and corresponding activation key to be used on a single server
