Answers

General
Q1. What are the benefits of installing HP management packs for MOM 2005?
A1. The HP Management Packs for MOM 2005 automate hardware discovery and state monitoring for HP ProLiant and Integrity servers within MOM 2005. They include predefined server groups, event processing rules and tasks. These enable IT administrators to streamline operations and ensure increased systems availability by monitoring key resources for Microsoft Windows environments and HP server hardware platforms through a common MOM 2005 Operator Console.

The Management Packs provide the following key benefits:
  • Automatically identify, group, and display HP ProLiant and Integrity servers within the MOM 2005 Operator Console
  • Populate MOM with server attribute and configuration data for HP hardware and software components
  • Monitor and display the state of HP server hardware and the associated management services
  • Proactively identify, translate, and display HP hardware events written to the Windows Event Log as MOM alerts
  • Provide browser-based links to HP management tools for hardware resource management and advanced remote administration from within MOM 2005
Additionally, the ProLiant Management Pack v1.3 and Integrity Management Pack v1.1 extend support to the latest ProLiant and Integrity servers, and enhance the user's ability to tune alert frequency and severity.

Q2. What versions of the ProLiant Server Pack (PSP) are supported?
A2. The ProLiant Management Pack v1.3 has been certified for of PSPs v7.2 through 8.0.

Q3. Do I need HP Systems Insight Manager now that I'm using MOM?
A3. The MOM Management Packs rely on other components provided by HP to create a complete view of the server being managed. These components are part of ProLiant and Integrity Essentials, and of HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM). HP recommends that these components be included by ensuring that the free Support Pack and HP SIM modules are loaded on each managed server. There is no requirement for any of the additional SIM components, but some of them might be very useful in managing your servers.

HP SIM provides hardware resource lifecycle management for HP servers, clients, printers and other standards-based devices. HP SIM collates and displays in-depth health and configuration information, group management, version control for HP system software, and remote administration via HP Lights-Out management processors. This highly extensible application can also provide advanced hardware performance, administration and vulnerability management with HP Essentials value-added software.

Implementing both MOM 2005 and HP Systems Insight Manager provides well-integrated and complementary benefits for managing adaptive enterprise environments.

Note that the MOM 2000 version of the Management Pack may work with MOM 2005, but HP discourages this configuration due to the potential for duplicated events and duplicated entities in the MOM database. Further, support for the MOM 2000 Management Pack has been terminated; HP can no longer offer free support on this product.
