Answers

General
Q1. What is Rapid Deployment Pack?
A1. RDP is multi-server deployment software that manages the server deployment via central console and provides imaging and scripting for server deployment, as well as integration of value-add software for servers. RDP is hosted on a Windows server deploying heterogeneous environments of Windows, Linux and VMware ESX.

Q2. What's New in version 3.80 of Rapid Deployment Pack?
A2. See the "What's New" section.

For supported servers, options and operating systems go to the Support Matrix.

Q3. Does RDP support deployment of other HP system platforms? Third-party platforms?
A3. The Altiris Deployment Server, which is a part of RDP, supports deployment of HP desktops, portables, workstations and handheld products. Click here to view more information on these products. Note that RDP only supports deployment of HP BladeSystem and other ProLiant servers, HP blade PCs and HP ProLiant Blade workstations. To use the integrated Altiris Deployment Server to deploy other systems the customer will have to buy Altiris licenses instead of RDP licenses.

Q4. What is the difference between the Altiris supplied version of Altiris Deployment Solution and the HP supplied version in Rapid Deployment Pack?
A4. The Altiris Deployment Solution in RDP is unchanged from the one supplied by Altiris. But in RDP it is tightly integrated with the ProLiant and Integrity Integration Modules, adding enhanced software, utilities and documentation to deploy and redeploy ProLiant and Integrity servers. The ProLiant and Integrity Integration Modules also enable advanced features for the ProLiant and Integrity BladeSystem servers, which are not provided in the Altiris supplied version of Deployment Solution.

A5. What support and services are available with RDP?
A5. Rapid Deployment Pack inculdes one year of 24 x 7 HP Software Technical Support and Update Service ensuring rapid access to HP support staff and proactive delivery of software updates. For more information about this service, please visit: http://www.hp.com/services/insight.

Options
Q1. How can I get Rapid Deployment Pack?
A1. Rapid Deployment Pack is available for purchase via your HP Authorized reseller, through major account direct, as well as the online HP SMB Store

Rapid Deployment Pack is available when configuring options for ProLiant ML and DL server purchases, as well as bundled with other ProLiant Essentials software in Insight Control Environment with or without BladeSystem enclosures.

An evaluation copy of Insight Control Environment including Rapid Deployment Pack is shipped with all HP BladeSystem enclosures. This evaluation includes a 7-day, 10-node evaluation license for RDP, upgradeable to a 30-day evaluation license.

Register and download an evaluation version of the RDP software, along with a 30-day, 10-node evaluation license.

Q2. Can I try the software before I buy it?
A2. Yes. Evaluation copies and associated evaluation licenses of Rapid Deployment Pack are available for download on the Web.

Rapid Deployment Pack offers the following evaluation licenses:
  1. 7-day, 10-server evaluation license with all new installations of Rapid Deployment Pack. This license is built into Rapid Deployment Pack and allows users who are evaluating the software from a DVD to proceed with the install without having to visit the web to request a license file. If you want to take advantage of this license, leave the License File field blank at the Deployment Solution Client Access Point Information screen during the initial install. To continue evaluation after 7 days, customers must register on the RDP Web site to obtain a 30-day license.

  2. 30-day, 10-server evaluation licenses from the Web site. After a simple registration, we provide two ways for you to access the license file: you can download the license file from this site and we will send the license file to you via your email. It is important that you fill in your email address correctly. This license file must be applied either during the first time that the product is installed or through the Product Licensing Utility, license.exe. See the User Guide for details on how to apply this license file.
These licenses limit the time and the number of targets that can be deployed during the evaluation period, but do not otherwise limit functionality.

Q3. What Rapid Deployment Pack licensing options are available?
A3. Rapid Deployment Pack offers 3 licensing options:
  • Single-server license - license to enable deployment of a single server through RDP
  • Flexible-quantity license - Flexible-quantity license kits are ways to obtain an exact quantity of licenses (minimum 5) with a single option kit and a single license key.
  • Activation Key Agreement - This option provides the customer with the ability to order a key for the total quantity of licenses desired over a longer period of time, and then purchase licenses (a material-less SKU) for each node deployed as required.
For more information on Flexible-quantity and Activation key agreement options, visit the ProLiant Essentials Licensing Options page.

Rapid Deployment Pack licenses are also included with Insight Control Environment licenses.

Q4. How do I obtain Rapid Deployment Pack license files?
A4. After purchasing your Rapid Deployment Pack standalone or as part of Insight Control Enviroment, you will receive a Rapid Deployment Pack license key. Register yourself as a user with this license key, and you will then be emailed one license file that covers the number of licenses that you have purchased.

Deployment & Management
Q1. What do I need to become familiar with to use Rapid Deployment Pack?
A1. HP recommends that you follow these guidelines before using RDP.
  • Review the technology demo that provides an overview of what Rapid Deployment Pack can do
  • Understand the different networking infrastructure alternatives (PXE, BootWorks, ILO/RILOE, etc) that Rapid Deployment Pack supports. The Introduction to Server Deployment Guide provides you an overview of the components and how they work.
  • Review the system requirements necessary to install the product
  • Understand what form of database you will use (SQL Server or SQL Express)
  • Review what type of installation you would like to deploy. See question below

Q2. How do I install Rapid Deployment Pack?
A2. Installing RDP is an easy, wizard-guided, step-by-step process when using the installation procedure from the Autorun menu of the RDP DVD or the Insight Control Management DVD. Please review the documentation and requirements for your system before running the installation.

Q3. How can I apply my purchased licenses?
A3. After purchasing your Rapid Deployment Pack standalone or as part of Insight Control Enviroment, you will receive a Rapid Deployment Pack license key. Register yourself as a user with this license key, and you will then be emailed one license file that covers the number of licenses that you have purchased. After obtaining your license file, you can apply your newly purchased license using the Altiris Product Licensing Utility, license.exe. See the User Guide for details on how to apply this license.

Q4. Do I need SmartStart or SmartSetup to use Rapid Deployment Pack?
A4. You do not need ProLiant SmartStart or Integrity SmartSetup for installation of the software and functional operations such as imaging or scripting. To take advantage of integrating in server software, you can copy ProLiant Support Packs (PSPs) or Integrity Support Packs (ISPs) from the SmartStart CD, or download them from the web. These files are also included with every RDP release.
Q5. Can I use HP RDP for deploying HP Thin Clients?
A5. RDP by virtue of its End User Licensing Agreement (EULA) can be used to deploy on HP ProLiant and Integrity servers, HP Blade PCs and HP Workstation Blades. However, the Altiris Deployment Engine embedded in RDP is unaltered from the generic Altiris version and as such can be used to deploy HP Thin Clients.

Q1. What is Imaging and Scripting?
A1. Imaging takes a snapshot or copy of your server's hard disk. RDP provides pre-configured imaging events for easy imaging of a server. You create this image by setting up a baseline server and uploading its image to a file server. Deploying an image to a target server requires that server to be configured with identical hardware and configuration to that of the source server. Scripting new server deployments using the features of the HP Scripting Toolkits allow more flexibility for configuring ProLiant and Integrity servers. Deploying servers using scripted installation makes use of hardware configuration files, OS script files and other utilities all scripted together to easily deploy a server over the network. This programmatic method of scripted installation enables consistent server configurations as well as easy deployment of high volumes of servers.

Q2. What advanced features are available for the HP BladeSystem servers?
A2. "Virtual Rack, Enclosure, Bay" - The physical location of Blade servers are known to RDP. A rack can have multiple enclosures and each enclosure has multiple bays. As each bay is uniquely identified, deployment events can be associated with a bay before a server is placed in it. Such an event will be executed as soon as a server is placed. It also enables the unique rip-and-replace function: all of the deployment history of a server in a specific bay is archived. Whenever the server in that bay is replace, that deployment history is "replayed" onto the replacement server.

Q3. Can I use Rapid Deployment Pack to deploy a cluster?
A3. Rapid Deployment Pack does not support the deployment of packaged clusters.

Q4. What features are provided with the deployment agents?
A4. The deployment agents fully automate the server deployment process and provide customers with the ability to remotely deploy software updates. The client agent provides important (post-OS install) configuration features including:
  • Inventory - hardware, OS, and configuration information
  • Command/script execution - deploy RPM packages (Linux)
  • Image capture and deployment
  • Power management (reboot, shutdown, etc)
  • File/Directory copy
  • Post configuration
  • IP address, Server Name, DNS, Gateway, subnet
  • Support HP one-time PXE boot sequence

Q5. How do HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) and Rapid Deployment Pack work together?
A5. Rapid Deployment Pack and HP Systems Insight Manager can be installed on the same server, or on separate servers. In either situation the RDP HP SIM connector can be installed to provide tight integration between the two management applications. This connector results in HP SIM being able to list undeployed servers, and the HP SIM menu bar being populated with RDP server deployment commands.

Licensing
Q1. How do I access my license activation key?
A1. Since November 2007, a license entitlement certificate is delivered in place of a registration code. The license entitlement certificate will be delivered via physical shipment for existing product numbers (with the exception of tracking licenses) and via e-mail for the new electronic license product numbers. It will contain information needed to redeem license files online. This new electronic redemption process will allow for better service and support tracking. For more information, please visit http://www.hp.com/go/ICe-license.
Q2. What is an electronic license to use or E-Delivery LTU?
A2. An electronic license is a new product offering which can be purchased as a single license or as multiple licenses with a single activation key. The customers will receive a license entitlement certificate via e-mail. The license entitlement certificate must be redeemed online or via fax in order to obtain the license activation key(s). Electronic license part numbers are only available through limited points of sale; if not available through your usual sales path, you may order the equivalent physical part number.
Q3. Can I use RDP to deploy virtual machines and what are the licensing requirements?
A3. Yes, RDP can be used to deploy virtual machine operating environments like VMware ESX (see support matrix for currently supported environments) and can also be used to deploy Windows operating systems onto virtual machine guests. RDP requires a license for each server deployed, be it physical or virtual. As an example: to deploy VMware ESX onto a ProLiant server and then deploy Windows Server 2003 onto four VM guests on that virtual server you need a total of 5 RDP licenses.
Q4. Do I have to buy RDP licenses to deploy HP Thin Clients?
A4. HP Thin Clients come with the Altiris Deployment Solution client agent pre-installed and are licensed for deployment with Altiris Deployment Server (hence also with RDP). This is because of a special contract between HP and Symantec/Altiris and of special code in the Altiris DS license manager. The license manager detects any HP Thin Client and licenses it automatically without requiring a new license file, or utilizing an existing RDP or Altiris license. So, there is no need for customers to buy a new RDP license or use an existing RDP license for deploying HP Thin Clients. Customers with HP Thin Clients that do not have RDP or Altiris Deployment Solution installed may download it from www.altiris.com/hptc.
Support
Q1. Does HP provide the support for Thin Client deployment using Altiris DS or RDP or should I contact Altiris?
A1. Customers can get support for Altiris Deployment Solution (even when it was installed as part of RDP) when used for deploying HP Thin Clients by contacting Altiris directly. Free support for Altiris Deployment solution is provided through the Altiris Support Portal at http://www.altiris.com/support.aspx.
