Virtual Graphics Remote Console with full keyboard & mouse support provides you with complete control of your remote server over the network via a standard browser

Today, IT administrators are challenged by the business demand for continuous uptime of business-critical servers. As server deployments grow in volume, both at remote sites and in large central data centers, IT managers are trying to make the best of tight budgets and limited staff. IT administrators require an easy and effective way to centrally manage all of their servers to make their business successful in today's highly competitive environment. Compaq now introduces Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition, which is designed and priced to provide remote server management in corporate data centers and remote sites. Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition allows browser access to Compaq servers through a seamless, hardware-based, OS-independent graphical remote console. Since it is hardware-based, it does not require any additional software or use any host server CPU cycles. The on-board graphical remote console capability turns the client browser into a virtual desktop, no matter what operating system the host server is running or what state it is in. The Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition also includes additional new features, such as a virtual power button, DNS/DHCP IP auto-configuration, and ROM-based configuration capability.

Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition eliminates many of the problems of centralized management by giving IT administrators 7X24X365 access to their servers, providing full control of hardware and operating systems through a client browser that can be used no matter where they are. Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition is well suited for managing servers located in the dense data centers or at distributed locations that have no IT staff on-site. Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition has its own dedicated processor, memory, NIC, and comes with an external power backup through an AC-adapter, that makes it completely independent of the host server OS and hardware.

Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition may be used to deploy a 'headless' server that does not require a monitor, keyboard, or a mouse. If Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition is deployed in every server in a rack, it is possible to eliminate these devices as well as the switchbox and associated cabling complexity. Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition gives IT administrators full remote control of their Compaq server console eliminating the need for attended operations for daily systems management. Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition is designed to meet the highest levels of remote management needs, making it a must-have for every Compaq server. Compaq is, therefore, offering Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition at a price that makes it very cost-effective to be deployed in all servers in data centers and remote sites.

key features
Virtual Graphical Remote Console - Hardware-based, OS-independent (Microsoft Windows 2000, NT4.0, NetWare 5, Redhat, SCO UnixWare 7, IBM OS/2) graphical remote console capability that provides easy 24x7x365 access to remote servers, requiring just a browser. It requires no additional software to be purchased, or installed and configured on the remote server or client machines, resulting in cost as well as time savings.

Virtual Floppy Drive - The Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition now supports a virtual floppy drive which allows the host server to remotely boot from a standard 1.44-MB floppy diskette. Using a free diskette image utility an administrator can quickly capture a snapshot file of a bootable floppy inserted in any network client. Once a floppy image file is saved, the administrator can then easily direct the host server to boot from the "virtual" floppy through the Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition web-interface. Additionally, the administrator can use the virtual floppy drive capability in combination with the graphical remote console to observe and control the server while the virtual floppy is in use. The virtual floppy drive also allows additional virtual floppy diskettes to be inserted and used (one at a time) by the remote host server.

Virtual Power Button - Allows IT administrators to remotely power up or down their remote servers with a mere click in the browser. Enabled with an included cable between the Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition board and the server power button or motherboard, this feature is currently supported on all new ProLiant ML, DL, and CL-series servers as well as 8000, 8500 and 1850R legacy servers.

Dedicated LAN Network Connectivity - An onboard Ethernet chip (10/100Mb/s) provides a dedicated network connection to the managed server. The board provides in-band SNMP notification in case of server problems to the Central Site management station on a real-time basis, without needing to maintain separate telephone connections or modem sharing devices. Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition can be used to manage a server located at a remote site having no LAN connection, by using either a Remote Access Server (RAS) or third-party modem gateway to access the Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition.

Auto-Configuration of IP Address via DNS/DHCP - Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition allows automatic network configuration and can be put to use straight out of the box. The board comes with a default name and DHCP client that leases an IP address from the DNS/DHCP server on the network. Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition also allows static IP assignment.

External Power Backup - An external power connector provides continuous power backup to the board allowing continuous access to the server, even when there is a server power failure or the server has been turned-off.

Server Troubleshooting Features - In addition, Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition delivers a rich set of remote systems management features that allow effective troubleshooting of remote server. These features include Power Cycle, Integration with Survey, Reset Failure and Sequence Replay, User Administration of up to 12 users, SNMP Trap Delivery to Insight Manager, Integrated Management Log, Configuration via SmartStart, and Compaq Remote Insight Event Log.

Group Configuration - Group Configuration simplifies an IT administrator's task of configuring and managing largely deployed Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition cards. Using the Lights-Out Configuration Utility, an administrator can easily configure user accounts, network and global settings for a group of cards, rather than one at a time. This can be performed in a batch process or by using Compaq Insight Manager XE's powerful device query mechanism.

Group Action - Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition allows group actions on one or many servers including power oin/off, power cycle, ROM upgrades, and even remote deployment of servers.

Pocket PC Access - Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition can be accessed from a Compaq iPAQ Wireless Pocket PC handheld device. This puts the IT administrator in control from anywhere and anytime increasing his response time to downtime events. This features is currently available as a technology preview only.

Security - Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition is a highly secure solution. It supports industry standard SSL (upto 128-bit encryption). All user actions are logged in the event log and alerts are generated for failed login attempts. Remote Insight HTTP and remote console ports can be configured and user privileges can be assigned. Progressive login delays are applied with failed login attempts providing protection against dictionary attacks.
