ten tips for improving graphical remote console |
 |
 |
If you are wondering how you can improve the performance of the Graphical
Remote Console, these simple ten steps will help you optimize the
Graphical Remote Console feature of the Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out
Edition.
- The speed of the remote console is dependent upon the
processing power of the client machine. As a result, Compaq recommends
that you use a single-processor client with a Pentium III, 500MHz
(or better). However, Compaq does not recommend use of a dual-processor
workstation for the client due to a performance issue with Java
on dual-processor machines.
- To insure optimal operation, it is very important to
select the correct operating system when using remote console.
On the remote console page, click on the Settings button on the
top right corner above the remote console window. In the window
that pops up, select the operating system you are running on the
host server and click on the close button to save the settings.
For example, if your host server is running Windows NT, select
Windows NT from the operating system pull down menu. Selecting
the right operating system optimizes the speed at which data is
captured and transferred during an active remote console session.
If your host is running Windows NT, the graphical console performance
will be substantially improved if you select Windows NT instead
of Default.
- Reducing the screen resolution of the host server will
enhance graphical console performance. Compaq recommends setting
the host server screen resolution to either 640x480 or 800x600.
- For Windows 2000, you must turn off the 3-D mouse cursor
and shadowing on the host server to enable optimal mouse performance.
Compaq recommends a standard 2-D mouse cursor setting without
shadowing.
- The remote console display supports 64 colors. To maximize remote console performance,
Compaq recommends that you use 256-bit color setting on the host server. To optimize
the color palette mapping, Compaq recommends that you use 16-bit
color setting (or above) on the host server. For some operating
systems 16-bit color setting is required.
- Compaq recommends turning off any "acceleration" option
under mouse settings. It is also recommended that you experiment
with different remote mouse speed settings on the host server
to provide the best possible mouse control. For example, in Microsoft
Windows NT Server 3.51/4.0, setting the mouse movement to the
slowest setting provides the best level of control.
- Compaq recommends using the new single-cursor remote console.
However, you may still use the legacy 2-cursor remote console.
When using the legacy 2-cursor remote console, Compaq recommends you routinely
sync up remote and local cursor using right-drag (or hold Ctrl key). The cursor
movement rates can also be synched by clicking on the Sync Mouse button on top
of the remote console window. After clicking the Sync Mouse button,
make sure that you do not move the local mouse cursor for a few seconds.
- Compaq recommends that you set client screen resolution
higher than remote server resolution to maximize remote console
visibility
- Compaq recommends that you use a plain background (not
a wallpaper pattern) on your host server
- Compaq recommends selecting the US:DOS character set
during boot up and when running the system configuration utility
(F10)
