Answers

General
Q1. What is iSCSI?
A1. iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface) is a SCSI transport protocol that uses the TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) for moving block-oriented storage data between application end points over Ethernet.

Q2. Why should I consider iSCSI?
A2. iSCSI provides businesses with new flexibility in their storage solutions. It enables access to pooled storage i.e. SAN thus creating a highly effective storage use, maximum scalability and equipment consolidation. The total cost of ownership (TCO) to build an iSCSI storage network is lower than for fiber channel. Network hardware is less expensive and network staff is already knowledgeable of the TCP/IP infrastructure.

Q3. How was HP involved in the development of iSCSI?
A3. HP is technology leader in defiining the iSCSI protocol. HP co-authored several iSCSI core specifications in IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force).

Q4. Is iSCSI available on the optional multifunction network adapters and the multifunction network adapters for HP BladeSystem?
A4. Accelerated iSCSI comes standard with the BladeSystem multifunction mezzanine adapter options and add-in PCI cards for ProLiant DL and ML servers. However, accelerated iSCSI is available as a license key upgrade for embedded multifunction adapters on the ProLiant servers via the HP ProLiant Essentials Accelerated iSCSI Pack.

Q5. Which servers does the ProLiant Essentials Accelerated iSCSI Pack support?
A5. Accelerated iSCSI Pack only supports servers that have the embedded Multifunction NIC.

Getting started
Q1. How is the key licensed?
A1. The key is licensed on a NIC port based. When installed, the licensed seats are available to individual ports (or more specifically to the port's MAC address) on Multifunction adapters. As a port is enabled for iSCSI, the server automatically associates the port to an unused seat. If the port is disabled for iSCSI use, the seat is made available so that it can be used to enable a different port.

Q2. Why is HP changing the license method from per server to per port?
A2. HP is changing the license method from per server to per port for the HP ProLiant Essentials Accelerated iSCSI Pack. This is because HP believes that certain customers may want to control which port to use as their path to the remote storage especially since this same hardware is used for both ethernet networking and storage networking.

Q3. What licensing options are available for Accelerated iSCSI Pack?
A3. HP PE Accelerated iSCSI Pack offers these three licensing options:
  • Single license - enables functionality of a single NIC port
  • Flexible-quantity license - to obtain an exact quantity of licenses (minimum number of 5) with a single option kit and a single license key
  • Activation Key Agreement license - Single license key for use with a specified number of seats. Payments can be done over a period of time per usage. Also referred to as Tracking license.
