Answers

General
Q1. What is HP Server Migration Pack - Universal Edition? How is it different than HP ProLiant Essentials Server Migration Pack and HP ProLiant Essentials Server Migration Pack - Physical to ProLiant Edition?
A1. HP Server Migration Pack - Universal Edition is the replacement product for both HP ProLiant Essentials Server Migration Pack and HP ProLiant Essentials Server Migration Pack - Physical to ProLiant Edition. One product now handles both physical and virtual migrations.
Q2. Is HP Systems Insight Manager required to use HP Server Migration Pack - Universal Edition?
A2. No, HP SIM is not required to use HP SMP Universal Edition. The SMP Universal Edition application is a standalone application that does not require HP SIM or the Insight Manager agents to be present. However, SMP Universal can be integrated with HP SIM for additional features such as server discovery and remote console support.
Q3. Is HP ProLiant Essentials Virtual Machine Management Pack (VMM) required for virtual migrations?
A3. No, there are no additional products required to perform migrations with HP Server Migration Pack - Universal Edition.
Getting Started
Q1. How can I get a copy of the HP Server Migration Pack - Universal Edition?
A1. Media for SMP-Universal can be obtained by ordering the HP Insight Control Management Software media kit. The software and trial licenses may also be downloaded.
Q2. What components do I need to get started?
A2. There are 4 components required:
  • A source server or virtual machine
  • A destination server or virtual host server
  • A computer to run the SMP-Universal application
  • SMP-Universal CD to install the SMP-Universal application, to run the SMP-Universal agent on the source/destination server and to boot the destination server for 2ProLiant migrations
Q3. What can I make use of to load the agent on the source/destination server and to boot the destination server remotely?
A3. The SMP Universal application can be used to push and install the SMP-Universal Agent on source servers and virtual host destination servers. If SMP-Universal is integrated with HP SIM, then HP SIM can also be used to push out the SMP-Universal Agent. For a 2ProLiant migration, the destination server can be made to boot from the Boot CD in a remote machine using the Virtual Media feature in iLO Advanced Pack.
Features
Q1. What kinds of migrations can I perform with HP Server Migration Pack - Universal Edition?
A1. SMP-Universal supports the following migration types from one interface:
  • Physical to ProLiant (P2ProLiant)
  • Virtual to ProLiant (V2ProLiant)
  • Physical to Virtual (P2V)
  • Virtual to Virtual (V2V) - Migrate between different types of virtual machines
Q2. What physical servers are supported by HP Server Migration Pack - Universal Edition?
A2. Any physical server is supported as a source system as long as it is running a supported OS. Specific HP ProLiant and HP BladeSystem servers are supported as destination physical servers. For the most up to date information on supported servers and operating systems, refer to the Support Matrix.
Q3. What virtual platforms are supported by HP Server Migration Pack - Universal Edition?
A3. SMP Universal supports migrating to/from virtual machines on VMware ESX, ESX 3i, VMware Server, VMware GSX, Microsoft Virtual Server, and Citrix XenServer. For the most up to date information on supported versions, refer to the Support Matrix.
Q4. What is the advantage of the sector copy method of migration that SMP-Universal uses versus the file-copy method?
A4. The sector copy method ensures an accurate migration. Sector by sector copy of source ensures that destination server is an exact replica of the source server and that no data is lost (even hidden system files) and it results in a complete transfer the entire server (operating system, application and data) without any errors.
Licensing
Q1. What are the licensing options for SMP-Universal?
A1. SMP-Universal is licensed per migration to a ProLiant or to a virtual server. X2ProLiant licenses cover P2ProLiant and V2ProLiant migrations. X2V licenses cover P2V and V2V migrations. There are several options available to purchase SMP-Universal:
  • 1-Migration X2ProLiant license: Single license key for 1 migration to a ProLiant server
  • 1-Migration X2V license: Single license key for 1 migration to a virtual server
  • Flexible Quantity X2ProLiant Migrations License: Single license key for a specified number of X2ProLiant server migrations
  • Flexible Quantity X2V Migrations License: Single license key for a specified number of X2V server migrations
  • 1 Yr Unlimited Migration Subscription license key - includes unlimited X2ProLiant and X2V migrations
Payment is made at time of initial purchase.
Q2. I have existing licenses for a previous version of Server Migration Pack or Server Migration Pack - Physical to ProLiant Edition. How do I use those?
A2. A utility is included with SMP-Universal to retrieve available licenses for previous versions of Server Migration Pack and Server Migration Pack - Physical to ProLiant Edition and make them available in the SMP-Universal license pool.
